Coastal Alabama Crab Watch Program

New Pilot Program for 2005, volunteers are always welcome.  Due to Hurricane Katrina, few volunteers are recreationally crabbing this season.  However, a new database has been developed to compile existing reports.  As volunteers return to the water, information and data will become available on this site.

Program Inception

The Mobile Bay Crab Watch Program is a cooperative effort involving the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, Alabama Marine Resources Division, and Volunteers!  Support for this program is provided through the Mobile Bay NEP's EPA base funding.  We hope this program will bring together resources managers and citizens to better understand crab populations in Coastal Alabama.  That's right - we're going Coastal!  From Perdido, Alabama all the way to the Grand Bay Savannah, anyone that recreationally crabs may participate in the program.  We currently have 38 volunteers and the more the merrier.

This pilot program is the first (at least we are aware of) and will certainly experience some modeling difficulties.  We hope to accomplish several things:

      1)      Monitoring of recreational crabbing efforts in Coastal Alabama
2)      Monitoring of several crab species that may occur in crab traps
3)      Monitoring of incidental by-catch in traps (the other stuff that gets in there)
4)      Watching for potential aquatic nuisance species
5)      Educate volunteers about our area resources

Volunteers collect basic data on things like the number of crabs caught, size, time of year, types of other critters found and perhaps water quality parameters.  The Mobile Bay NEP does leg work with the volunteers, synthesizes the data, handles communication, and provides some necessary tools and information.  The Alabama Marine Resources Division will help identify usual things found, analyze data collected, educate us all as needed, and provide general guidance as requested.
