Derelict Crab Trap Recovery Program

Derelict Crab Trap Recovery Program
Saturday, March 11, 2006
8:00AM to Noon

Despite the strong southerly wind, volunteers collected 300+ traps.  Thank you everyone for roughing the seas.  Without you, the program would not be possible!

Remember, traps may only be legally collected on volunteer days regulated through the Alabama Marine Resources Division.  But keep a mental note of where you find those derelict traps for collection on March 11, 2006.  We suggest taking pictures of locations where traps have been sited at low water times.

In June 2002, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Marine Resources Division held a pilot program for removing derelict crab traps from Alabama coastal waters.  The Mobile Bay NEP along with the Coastal Conservation Association, the Alabama Seafood Association and many other groups supported the effort.  The success of the pilot program led to scheduling two programs for 2003 and one in 2004.  Due to popular demand a program is now planned for Saturday, March 11, 2006.
