Introduction

Water Quality
Water is vital to every living organism on Earth. Without water, growth slows or the organism even dies. Coastal Alabama is blessed with an abundance of water in the rivers, bayous and bays, but what do we really know about it?
How clean is the water in Mobile Bay? This is a common question many people ask. But there is no easy answer. More information is needed to answer the question and within the Water Quality section of the CCMP are several plans to help define and answer it. The management plan defines the objective of the water quality issue as to: "attain and/or maintain water quality sufficient to support healthy aquatic communities and designated human uses by 2010." The following sections address water quality: Water Resources Management, Nutrients, Pathogens, and Toxic Chemicals.
If you or your group is working on a project identified in this management plan, let us know and we will tell about it on these pages.

What you'll find in these pages:
Issues
For each issue identified, we'll answer the questions below.
"What's the Problem" summarizes the one or more highlighted issues.
"What Are We Doing?" describes current management objectives and specific actions that are addressing highlighted issues.
"How Can We Map Our Progress?" links actions with management results to date. Look here to see on-the-ground work in progress.
Contributing Factors
An interactive graphic shows how everyday human activities in coastal watersheds increase pressures along the coast. When not managed wisely, these activities can negatively impact the health of coastal environments.

This framework for reporting performance was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. PIVOT is designed to help communities or programs assess and communicate how well their management plans are working.
