MBNEP and Alabama Coastal Section are working with Coastal Bird Conservation in a monitoring effort to determine pre- and post-spill impacts to beach-nesting birds, shorebirds, and their habitats across the Gulf Coast. Click here for photos from the field.

A peer listening training session is scheduled for July 23, 2010 in Gulf Shores, AL. This training teaches trusted community leaders how to help friends, neighbors, and co-workers who may be reluctant to seek professional mental health services due to the effects of the oil spill. If you would like to be trained, register online here.

Transcripts of three community forums about the oil spill held in Biloxi, MS and Mobile, AL in early June are now available online at http://gulfseagrant.tamu.edu/oilspill/transcripts.htm. The forums were question and answer sessions that covered several topics: wildlife and fisheries; technological disasters and mental health; business and personal finance; data and monitoring; and legal perspectives.

Donate to Restore our Estuary

In light of the impending threat of the oil leak to our fragile ecosystem, The Mobile Bay NEP has set up the Coastal Estuary Restoration Fund (CERF) with the Community Foundation of South Alabama to support projects that will restore the long term health of the water quality, living resources, habitats, and human uses of Mobile Bay and its estuarine environment. To give, visit the Community Foundation's website and designate your donation for the Coastal Estuary Restoration Fund.

For a central site with information concerning the Deepwater Horizon spill and impacts on human health, seafood, recovery, and oiled wildlife, please visit the Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant site, which will be continually updated as information comes in.

Volunteer Information

We are no longer collecting volunteer information. If you are interested in volunteering to reduce the impacts of the oil spill to our Bay, please call Alabama 211 at 1-866-421-1266 or the BP Volunteer Request line at 1-866-448-5816.

If you live in Mobile or Baldwin Counties, Alabama Coastal Foundation, Mobile Baykeeper, and the Coalition of Active Stakeholders Team (COAST) have developed a volunteer field observer program to assess our shorelines pre- and post-oil spill impact. If you are interested in this program, contact the Alabama Coastal Foundation office at 251-990-6002.
