One of the first efforts of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program was to hold a series of public workshops during June, 1996. There were seven public meetings held community-wide. The goal of the meetings was to increase public awareness and involvement for developing the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.  In addition, the meetings were to give the community an opportunity to identify and prioritize environmental issues concerning Mobile Bay.  Issue workgroups were developed to address the identified priority problems.  Since that time technical / science and lay people have met regularly. The issues originally identified in June 1996 continue to be a driving focus for the Mobile Bay NEP.

The Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan was approved April 22, 2002.  These issue workgroups now have the task of seeing the many actions outlined in the plan come to reality.
