Gulf Mercury Forum Scheduled

The concern about the methylmercury found in the Northern Gulf waters, as well as the seafood caught there and the area residents eating this seafood, has prompted strong interest in learning more about the problem. The attention raised by this issue has prompted several Gulf state and federal agencies, legislators, industries, and residents to seek out scientific facts regarding mercury’s implications on public health, fisheries and industry.

In response, several organizations including Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, the Mobile Bay Watch, the Mobile Bay NEP, the World Wildlife Fund, and The Forum are sponsoring the upcoming “Mercury Forum: An Assessment of Methylmercury in the Northern Gulf Environment”. It is scheduled to be held May 20-21, 2002 at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, AL. Full details including registration information are available on the Mercury Forum’s Web site at www.masgc.org/mercury.

The Mercury Forum will cover such topics as Mercury in Humans, Mercury in the Environment, Current and Proposed Mercury Science and Education Projects, and Economic Realities of Mercury in the Environment. The meeting will finish with a needs analysis discussion to decide what should be done on this issue in the near future.
