OYSTER GARDENING
STORM PREPARATIONS

Under no circumstance do we want any volunteer taking any unnecessary risks.  Please avoid any personal injury.  We can always get more materials and oysters.

IN CASE OF A SEVERE STORM, PLEASE:

OPTION 1

a.
Move cage and oysters to the shore in the shade and tie them to a tree or post.

b. REMEMBER to place oysters back into the water after the storm passes.

c.
Oysters are less tolerant the warmer the air temperature.  A wet burlap bag placed    over the oysters will minimize heat stress.

OPTION 2

a.  If you have a Page cage, position it with oysters resting on bottom and tie it to the base of a piling.  After storm, REMEMBER to check for damages and place cage in original position.

b. Any other type of cage – request oyster bags from Mobile Bay NEP.  Transfer oysters to bags and allow them to sit on the bottom and tie them to the base of pilings.  In this case, take your growout cage and secure it on shore.  After storm, REMEMBER to place oysters back in your growout cage.
