Post Hurricane
Ivan! |
|
Hurricane Ivan will not soon be forgotten. The damage this storm
caused on September 15, 2004 has left most Alabama and Florida coastal
communities devastated. Not only did this storm affect the human
population, it also seriously damaged the oysters of Mobile Bay. Our
Volunteers suffered major damage to their piers and some houses were
flooded by the storm surge. About 80% of our gardeners lost their
oysters due to Hurricane Ivan. Also, it is estimated that about 80% of
the oysters on Cedar Point Reef were destroyed by Ivan. These pictures are indicative of what a
storm of this magnitude can accomplish. |
 |
The Tew's Pier the Tuesday before Ivan. The surf was
already way above normal. They took a few boards out every few feet to
try to save their pier. Unfortunately Ivan took it anyway. |
 |
Louis Buckalew, on DIP, designed this pier to
breakaway during a storm. Clever! |
 |
Tom and Mary Hutchinson on DIP only lost the bottom
half of their pier. Looks like the grassbeds survived beautifully! |

This bulkhead and pier on County Road 1 suffered
damage from the storm surge. |

Sand on Dauphin Island! |

Thanks to Dean Koch, Kara was able to check for oysters without
cutting her foot on any hurricane debris! Although her canoeing skills
could use some improvement. |
| We are happy to announce on November 12, 2004, with
the much appreciated help from Auburn Marine staff, over 26,000
oysters were placed on Denton Reef! Thanks Gardeners for your
tremendous effort this year! |
