About the NEP

In March 1995, Mobile Bay was designated a National Estuary. The National Estuary Program (NEP) was established by amendments to the Clean Water Act of 1987. The program is administered through the Environmental Protection Agency.  The initial task was to develop a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for estuaries of national significance that are threatened by pollution, development, or overuse.  All 28 estuary programs are now implementing their CCMPs.  Mobile Bay ranks high as one our nation's significant estuaries. The charge of the Mobile Bay NEP is to facilitate a blueprint for conserving our estuary. This effort requires the input and support of all stakeholders.
