One of five* public meetings  to assist the Environmental Management Commission and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management with their strategic planning process will be held at  6:30 PM, December 16, 2003 at Mobile Government Plaza, 205 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program. All interested citizens are urged to attend. The following are two excerpts from the press release issued by ADEM on December 4, 2003 describing these meetings:

Earlier this year, the Environmental Management Commission (EMC) initiated a planning process involving both the EMC and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) with the objective of establishing a strategic plan for both entities. A necessary step in this process is the identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for success, and threats to success (SWOT analysis).

To assist in this regard, the EMC has received input from a 23 member stakeholder committee and is now soliciting comments from interested persons regarding a SWOT analysis of the EMC and ADEM.”

The sessions are designed to provide those in attendance an opportunity to comment on one or all four of the components of a SWOT Analysis applicable to the EMC and/or ADEM. The information collected, along with other information received, will be used by the EMC and ADEM to complete that portion of the strategic planning process.

The meetings are being conducted to provide for the receipt of information and as such presentations on any component of the SWOT Analysis will be limited to accommodate all those in attendance. Comments relative to a specific application, project, permit, or activity are not appropriate for these meetings, but should be addressed in the appropriate comment periods or public hearings.

This is the last public meeting in the series and the only one for the Gulf Coast.

*other public meetings were scheduled in Huntsville, Montgomery, Birmingham and Dothan. Locations were included in the ADEM Press release but were omitted from this announcement to focus on the local meeting.
