Derelict Crab Trap Recovery Program Announced

Alabama Marine Resources Division

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Marine Resources Division announces a one day closed season for the taking of crabs by the use of crab traps (commercial or recreational) within 500 yards of the Alabama shoreline on Saturday, March 15, 2003.  Any crab traps remaining in the closed areas will be considered marine litter and can be removed by any individual.  Anyone who removes crab traps (commercial or recreational) that are considered marine litter do so under the jurisdiction of the Marine Resources Division and must dispose of such litter properly.

Anyone participating in the program may use an airboat provided that they register with the Marine Resources Division no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2003.  Anyone using an airboat within the AMRD jurisdiction that is not registered with the derelict crab trap removal program will be in violation of the law and subject to punishment as provided by law.

This program is a coordinated effort initiated by the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program and Coastal Conservation Association.  Additional conservation societies, commercial fishermen, recreational fishermen and concerned citizens are expected to participate in this clean-up effort.  Interested groups can contact:
