Up to $20,000 in Mini-Grants Available from Mobile Bay NEP

For Immediate Release April 1, 2003

Mini grants for up to $3000 dollars are available through the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program.  The next proposal deadline is May 1, 2003.  All projects must be conducted within the watershed of the Mobile Bay and Mobile Tensaw Delta.  An organization or individual need not work directly with the water to apply.

The most recent awards were to the Daphne Public Library and Alabama Coastal Foundation, both received $3000 mini grants.  The Daphne Public Library will use its funds to support the development of an Earth Matters collection with the help of local volunteers from the group, Earth Faithful.  The Alabama Coastal Foundation is in its second year of monitoring public beaches for enterococcus bacterial.  The funds will be used to have water samples analyzed on a regular basis.

The Mobile Bay NEP awards up to $3000 to successful applicant for innovative ideas that foster education, research, and resource management in the Mobile Bay and Delta.  Through these grants the NEP hopes to promote a greater awareness and understanding of environmental issues concerning the Mobile estuary.  Projects have been previously awarded to schools, researchers, and environmental organizations.  The program has up to $20,000 available for the May selection so multiple recipients may be chosen if their projects meet the objectives of the Mobile Bay NEP’s comprehensive plan.  Only one mini grant will be awarded to successful applicants per grant cycle.  Staff is available by phone to give guidance on the application procedure.  For more information on how you may apply, call the office at 431-6409 or log onto the website www.mobilebaynep.com.
