The Community
Project Description
- Dauphin Island is part of the MS Sound Complex of coastal watersheds that include West Fowl River and Bayou La Batre. The island plays a pivotal role in protecting the mainland coastline and supporting the ecology of MS Sound and Portersville Bay. Dauphin Island also shares many of the region’s issues and needs in regards to the six values presented in the MBNEP CCMP, these values include Environmental Health and Resiliency, Culture and Heritage, Access, Fish and Habitats, Shorelines, and Water Quality. The MBNEP will be seeking input from Dauphin Island residents and property owners to get their perspective on the six values and the importance of the island to the region. The MBNEP will be developing a watershed plan for Dauphin Island at a future date as part of the RESTORE FPL program. Once that program gets initiated the NEP will develop a steering committee and the watershed planning process will get under way.
Outreach Plan
- Throughout the course of the project, the entire Dauphin Island Watershed community will be kept informed of milestones and accomplishments of the study process and will be continuously encouraged to participate in community meetings and surveys. Resource materials to be developed and used for the process will include PowerPoint presentations, maps, graphics, surveys, fact sheets, worksheets, invitation letters, and lists of active community participants. Our innovative approach is as follows: Identify Stakeholders, Recruit Stakeholders, Community Meetings. The completed WMP will be presented and discussed to engage locally elected and state officials in an open meeting or another open house forum. It will be essential to engage stakeholders that may be responsible for project implementation such as City, County, EPA, and FWS. Some of these implementation agencies may also provide funding for potential projects. It is anticipated that the WMP will be adopted in full along with a resolution requesting that the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR).
